Armed Forces Flag Day

The Armed Forces Flag Day is observed every year since 1949 in India on 7th December to honor the martyrs and the soldiers, sailors and airmen who valiantly fought on the borders of our country to safeguard the country’s honor.

After Independence in 1947, the government of India felt the need for funds for the betterment and welfare of its defense personnel, a committee was set up under the Defence Minister on 28th August 1949, which decided to observe a Flag Day annually on the 7th December  by distributing small flags among the citizens of the country and in return to collect funds for the welfare and betterment of defense personnel.

In 1993, the Ministry of Defence consolidated related welfare funds into a single Armed Forces Flag Day Fund.

The Funds collected are used for- Rehabilitation of war casualties, welfare and betterment of serving personnel and their families and, for resettlement and welfare of ex-servicemen of the armed forces and their families.
