All Male Drafting

A US federal appeals court is to consider if the men only drafting in the US military is constitutional or not.

  • Drafting:

Drafting, also known as conscription, is the mandatory enlistment of people in military service (or any national service). Historically, conscription largely targeted men, with a major percentage of them being drafted before being old enough to vote, according to National Coalition for Men (a non-profit educational organisation).

  • Conscription in USA:

USA uses Selective Service System as a contingency mechanism for drafting people and rapidly expanding the armed forces in case of national emergency. According to US law, it is compulsory for all men aged between 18 and 25 years to register with the SS. Failure to register can invite fine and imprisonment. All male drafting is considered unconstitutional as women have been considered eligible for combat roles in USA since 2015.

  • Conscription around the world:

23 countries around the world have authorised military conscription but have not implemented it. USA is one of these countries. In 60 countries, conscription is authorised and practiced. Some countries have authorised conscription of women but have not implemented it. Eg: Sudan, Vietnam, etc. About 11 countries draft both men and women for military services.
