12th National Conference on Safety in Mines held in New Delhi
On 28th January 2020, the 12th National Conference on Safety in Mines was inaugurated in New Delhi by the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Labour and Employment, Santosh Kumar Gangwar and the Labour Ministry has introduced `Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions (OSH) Code’ in Parliament under which annual health check-up of mine workers and safety standards are ensured.
The National Conference on Mine Safety was firstly organized in the year 1985 after an explosion in Chinakuri Colliery in Eastern India. The two- day conference will review the status of safety and availability of measures to improve the working conditions in mines.
The Minister of Labour and Employment, addressing the National Conference said that Ministry has taken several steps in order to increase required safety standards in the mines and also there is a need to look into the security measures for private mines.
The conference is expected to come out with important recommendations suggesting measures for further improvement in safety, welfare and health of mineworkers which is organized by Directorate General of Mines Safety.
