The One Nation One Subscription (ONOS) initiative democratizes access to global scholarly knowledge in India, aligning with NEP 2020 and ViksitBharat@2047 goals. A ₹6,000 crore budget is allocated for its first phase (2025–2027). The primary objective of the One Nation One Subscription (ONOS) is to provide equitable access to scholarly research journals and articles from top international publishers to all eligible students, faculty, and researchers across India. The initiative promotes interdisciplinary research, particularly benefiting Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. A unified portal will streamline digital processes for students, researchers, and faculty. The Department of Higher Education will lead awareness campaigns for maximum user adaptation.

China launched its first domestically developed deep-sea exploration ship, Tansuo-3 (Exploration-3). The ship officially entered service in Sanya City, Hainan province. Tansuo-3 has a range of 17,261 miles and includes icebreaking capabilities. It will strengthen China’s deep-sea exploration, alongside other icebreakers like Xuelong, Xuelong 2, and Jidi.

The 24th Rashtriya Vanvasi Krida Pratiyogita held in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. Tribal athletes from across India, including the Andaman-Nicobar Islands and Manipur, participated in the event. The event was organized by the Vanvasi Vikas Samiti under the Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram. More than 800 tribal youth from 33 provinces are competing in sports like football and archery.

The Territorial Army has formed a new task force to rejuvenate and protect the Gomti River. Gomti River is a tributary of the Ganga, flowing entirely through Uttar Pradesh. It originates from Gomat Taal (Fulhaar Jheel) in Pilibhit district. The river flows through Lucknow, Barabanki, Sultanpur, Faizabad, and Jaunpur before joining the Ganga. It stretches about 900 km and drains a basin of approximately 18,750 square km. The Gomti is a perennial river, providing continuous water flow throughout the year.

The first photographic proof of Pallas’s cat in Himachal Pradesh was captured during a snow leopard survey. This highlights the urgent need for conserving lesser-known species in the Indian Himalayas. Pallas’s cat (Otocolobus manul) is a small, long-haired cat in the Felidae family. It was named after Peter Simon Pallas, who first described it in 1776. It is mainly found in Central Asia, including parts of Iran, Mongolia, China, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. Pallas’s cats inhabit mountainous plains and semi-desert foothills. The IUCN lists them as “Least Concern” and they are on CITES Appendix II.

The Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA) has directed Madhya Pradesh to address complaints from 52 villages regarding non-recognition of forest rights and forceful eviction near the Rani Durgavati Tiger Reserve. Villagers from Damoh, Narsinghpur, and Sagar districts allege violations of the Forest Rights Act (FRA) and Wildlife Protection Act (WLPA) after the reserve was notified in September 2023. The Rani Durgavati Tiger Reserve is located in Madhya Pradesh. The reserve is spread across the districts of Sagar, Damoh, and Narsinghpur, covering an area of 2,339 square kilometers.

January 6 is observed as World Day of War Orphans to highlight the struggles of children who lose parents to war. Millions of children worldwide face impacts of conflict, climate change, displacement, and poverty. The day calls for collective efforts to ensure care, education, and protection for these vulnerable children. More than 460 million children live in or flee conflict zones like Sudan, Ukraine, Myanmar, and Palestine. These children face physical dangers and emotional trauma from losing their families.

The Anji Khad Bridge, recently completed in Jammu and Kashmir, is India’s first cable-stayed rail bridge. It is part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. The bridge spans 725.5 meters and features a 193-meter-high main pylon. It is designed to withstand severe weather conditions. This bridge improves connectivity between Katra and the Kashmir Valley, boosting tourism and economic growth. Its construction involved advanced techniques and international collaboration, highlighting India’s commitment to modern infrastructure.

Researchers introduced Twigstats, a tool for time-stratified ancestry analysis, in a Nature study. Twigstats significantly enhances statistical power and reduces errors in ancestry studies. It provides high-resolution, precise individual-level ancestry analysis. The tool is coded in C++ and uses the statistical language R. Twigstats enables fine-grained analysis of specific historical periods.
