Thangavelu Mariyappan will be India’s flag bearer at the 2016 Rio Paralympics closing ceremony on September 18, 2016. He has won India’s first gold medal in the men’s high jump T-42 event with jump of 1.89 metres at the 2016 Rio Paralympics. With this, Thangavelu became the first Indian high jumper to win Paralympics gold. His compatriot Varun Singh Bhati clinched the bronze medal in the same event.
