The Volkswagen Passat sedan won the 2015 European Car of the Year award. Passat won the award by beating off the challenge of seven other contenders, which included the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the Mercedes C class. The award was initiated 1964, since than Fiat won nine times when it was famous for producing unreliable rust buckets. BMW has never won. Mercedes has won only once. VW has three previous victories, two with the Golf and one with the little Polo.
