Ireland became the first country in the world to legalise gay marriage and its constitutional protection. Ireland has voted by a huge majority to legalise same-sex marriage by popular vote in a move hailed as a social revolution and welcomed around the world.
However, we note that Denmark was the first country in the world to legally recognize same-sex unions as back as October 1, 1989.

    South Africa legalised gay marriage in 2006. And there were at least five countries to do it before that.
