The Government of India (GoI) has signed $650 million loan agreement with the World Bank (WB) for construction of the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC)-III project. The EDFC-III will build the 401 km Ludhiana-Khurja section which goes through Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. The purpose of the EDFC project is to augment railway freight carrying capacity along the Railway Corridor between Ludhiana and Kolkata. The EDFC is a freight-only rail line that will help faster and more efficient movement of raw materials and finished goods between the north and eastern parts of India.
