The Jalisco-based Consejo Regulador Del Tequila is also all set to get the GI tag in India. Mexicans have long identified tequila as not just their national drink, but also as a unique symbol of their culture and environment, the notification says. The Agave tequilana plant, commonly known as weber’s blue agave, the extract of which is used to make tequila, can only be planted and harvested within the limits of Jalisco region in Mexico.It has become the 10th product under the wine-spirit category to get the GI tag in India. Others include champagne and cognac (France), Scotch whisky (UK), Porto and Douro wines (Portugal) Napavalley wine (US), Peruvian Pisco brandy ( Peru) and fenny and Nasik Valley wine (India).
