Sayaji Rao Gaekwad, King of Baroda was the first to do a successful experiment of compulsory education in India. He had declared in 1892 that there would be a compulsory primary education in one Taluka of Amraili , which consisted around 9 villages of his state. In this plan, the boys of 7-12 and girls of 7-10 age were to be imparted free education. The experiment began in 1893 and was successful , thus later expanded to 52 villages of the same taluka. In 1906, this state made compulsory the education for all children by an act in 1906.
