Birsa Munda converted to Christianity in Chaibasa to attend a missionary school. He was born in Ulihatu village, Khunti district. He attended school at Salga under Jaipal Nag and encountered missionaries in Khatanga. He adopted the Christian name Birsa David temporarily before renouncing it and founding the Birsait faith focused on tribal roots.
