Medini Rai was a king of the Chero dynasty who ruled Palamau in the early 1600s. He reclaimed forts from the Mughals around 1660 and expanded his territory to South Gaya and Hazaribagh. He defeated Khokhra and Nagvanshi rulers and rebuilt the Naya Qila after conquering Navratangarh. The renaming of Daltonganj to Medininagar honors Medini Rai. He died in 1634 and was known for his administration in the region.
