Pinky Karmakar will be Indian ‘torch bearer’ at London Olympics

Pinky Karmakar, a 17 year old girl and a student of class X from a remote tea garden in Assam will be among India’s ‘torch bearer’ at the London Olympics. She will represent India among 20 countries at the Olympic torch relay in Nottinghamshire on June 28, 2012. 

Her father is a painter and her mother a tea-leaf plucker in a tea garden.Pinky runs a daily sports programme at her school and teaches for about 40 women, including her mother. She has also actively participated in the programmes that create awareness about child marriage, adult literacy and alcoholism.

Pinky is part of the International Inspiration Programme, a sports legacy project of London 2012, run in partnership with UK Sport, Unicef and the British Council.
The motto of the programme is to reach young people all around the world and connect them to the inspirational power of the Games so they are inspired to choose sport.
