October 2: International Day of Non – Violence

The United Nations marks October 2 every year as the International Day of Non – Violence. It is being marked since 2007. The objective is to promote non – violence through education and public awareness.

The day has strong connection with the works, methods and beliefs of Mahatma Gandhi. It is observed by organizing seminars, lectures, discussions and press conferences. There are also events like multi – faith meetings, street awareness campaigns and photo exhibitions being organized on the day.

Background

The idea was proposed by an Iranian Nobel Laureate Shrin Ebadi in 2004. The idea attracted the Congress party. Following the Satyagraha Conference resolution in 2007, the party called up the UN to adopt the idea.
