Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana(PMGSY) was launched in the year 2000 by then-Prime Minister of India, Late Atal Bihari Vajpayee. PMGSY is a nationwide plan launched with the objective to provide good all-weather road connectivity to unconnected villages across the country.
The Scheme was completely funded by the central government for Phase I and Phase II. In November 2015, the 14th Financial Commission recommended funds to be shared in the ratio of 60:40 between the Central Government and the State Governments. Based on the recommendations, Phase III was approved by the Union Cabinet in July 2019, under which the Central Government and State Government to share in the 60:40 ratio respectively. Except for the 8 North Eastern States and 2 Himalayan States( Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand) for which the share of funds would be 90% Central Government to 10% for the State Governments. The duration of Phase-III will be up to the financial year 2024-25.
