“Youth to the EDGE”: A Pilot Program set in motion

“Youth to the Edge”, a pilot program set up at the function held at Indian Mountaineering Foundation, New Delhi, by Shri Paban Singh Ghatowar, Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region.

Objective of This Programme:

  • To encourage adventure activities in the remote areas of North East Region (NER). Capacity Building of NER youth.

The volunteers from National Service Scheme (NSS) and Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) under Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to take part in the adventure activities under the project. The states in the NER extend enormous potency for several adventure / outdoor activities viz. Rock climbing & Rappelling, Jeep Safaris, Cultural Tours, Mountaineering, Trekking & camping, Village / Home stay, water skiing, White Water Rafting / Canoeing / kayaking, community tourism, Bird watching, Angling, etc.

Capitalizing this potency, Ministry of Development of NER, in coaction with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, under the pilot program “Youth to the Edge”, aims to encourage adventure activities in the remote areas of NER, in which around 2000 spring chickens (1500 from NER + 1500 from other States) will take part in adventure and cultural activities. On a try out basis, 03 trekking trails (02 in Arunachal & 01 in Nagaland) have been designed for the volunteers from National Service Scheme (NSS) and Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) under Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The pilot program is being set up with the Motto “Adventure to the Paradise Unexplored”.

Under the program, the NER spring chickens will be trained via the National Mountaineering Institutes and other adventure training establishments. After conclusion of the courses, they will get openings to work as escorts / guides on their own.
