Shrimp farming training for EU importers

The Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies conducted a 4 days training program for food sector players from the European Union. The program trained scientists, entrepreneurs and technologists on techniques of farming the Indian Shrimp. The program is seen as an exhibition of the superior quality standards and hygiene standards adopted by the Kerala shrimp farming sector. This is expected to boost export of the Indian shrimps from the state. The training program included classroom lectures, field visits, discussions with shrimp farmers, etc. The course included shrimps’ biology, disease management, antibiotic usage, health management, taxonomy and also the marketing process. Most of the participants were from Aker Biomarine, an MNC in the food industry, which is based from Norway. COOP, a Switzerland based firm with food supply chain across Europe has reached an agreement to procure organically grown shrimps from the university supported farmers in Kerala.
