Kushinagar Airport declared International Airport

On June 24, 2020, the Union Cabinet chaired by PM Modi approved the proposal to declare the Kushinagar airport in Uttar Pradesh as international airport.

Highlights

The airport was given international importance to increase domestic and international tourism in the region. Around 200 to 300 devotees from Cambodia, Japan, Burma and Thailand are offering prayers at Kushinagar.

About Kushinagar

Kushinagar is recognized as a sacred Buddhist pilgrimage centre. It serves as presenting site for the Buddhist pilgrimage circuit spanning India and Nepal. It is dotted with several other Buddhist sites in the region such as Kapilvastu, Sravasti, and Lumbini.

Kapilvastu

It is the ancient city where Gautama Buddha spent 29 years of his life.

Lumbini

According to Buddhist tradition, Lord Buddha was born in Lumbini. Lumbini is located in Nepal.

Sravasti

Sravasti was the capital of Kosala kingdom. It is located near the West Rapti river.
