INS Nireekshak rescued fishermen stranded off the coast of Kochi

The INS Nireekshak was recently involved in the rescue of 10 fishermen who were stranded off the coast of Kochi.

INS Nireekshak is a vessel of the Southern Naval Command which is based in Kochi, Kerala. It is a diving support vessel that was commissioned in 1989. It was initially used for ONGC’s offshore oil exploration work. It is equipped with Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicles (DSRV).

Diving support vessel is a category of ships used for professional diving projects. Such vessels act as a floating base for these diving projects. They were developed mainly for offshore diving operations that were a part of offshore oil exploration.

The Recent Rescue

The recent rescue of the 10 fishermen is noteworthy as it comes in times of the global pandemic. To prevent potential infection, the rescue operation was conducted without any physical contact. The supplies needed by the fishermen, like provisions, water and fuel, were transferred using the vessel’s crane.
