India loses Hosting Rights for 2021 Men’s World Boxing Championship

After failing to pay the host fee, India lost the opportunity to host the 2021 men’s World Boxing Championship for the first time.

India had signed an agreement with AIBA in 2017 to host the 2021 men’s World Boxing Championship event. However, the AIBA recently terminated the agreement over India’s failure to pay the hosting fee. The event is now planned to be held in Belgrade in Serbia.

World Boxing Championship

The World Boxing Championship is an amateur boxing competition organised by AIBA. It was held for the first time in 1974 in Cuba. The men’ and women’s event are being held separately since 2001. As of 2019, there are 8 weight categories for the men’s event.

AIBA

AIBA or International Boxing Association is a sport organisation formed in 1946. Till 2019, the International Olympic Committee recognised AIBA as the international governing body for the sport of boxing. However, IOC suspended the recognition and banned AIBA from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
