Hornbill Festival begins in Nagaland

Hornbill Festival is the annual festival of Nagaland held every year from 1-10 December, began on Sunday. Also known as the ‘Festival of Festivals’ was first celebrated in the year 2000 to promote the cultural heritage of the state and for encouraging inter-tribal interaction.

This year, to boost the state’s tourism potential, the Nagaland government has partnered with California based Airbnb as the official accommodation partner for the festival.

The festival will be held in two districts of Nagaland- cultural events taking place in the Naga Heritage Village of Kisama, about 12km from capital Kohima and a musical festival in Dimapur.

The festival symbolizes ‘Respect and Folklore’ among the people of Nagaland is named after the Hornbill bird.

Hornbill 2019 has been declared Zero waste event with an aim to promote the ban of single-use plastic.

1st December also marks the Statehood Day of Nagaland. On 1st December 1963, Nagaland became the 16th state of India.
