Australia decides to sell Uranium to India

  • Australia’s ruling Labor Party Okayed the decision to sell uranium to India. Bilateral cooperation in energy sector was one of the important facets of India s multi-faceted ties with Australia. Australia has so far refused to sell Uranium to India as India is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). The Australian Labour Party’s decision clears way for negotiations between the two countries for a civil nuclear agreement. Such an agreement will considerably boost India’s nuclear power generation capability as Australia has 40% of the world’s uranium reserves.

Evergreen actor Dev Anand dies at 88

  • Hindi cinema s evergreen hero Dev Anand (88) passed away. In a career spanning six decades, Dev Anand acted in 110 films and produced 35 under his Navketan banner which was set up in 1950. Born on September 26, 1923 in Gurdaspur, now in Pakistan, Dev landed in the cinema capital of the country Bombay to try his luck in Bollywood at the age of 19. He made his debut in 1946 film Hum Ek Hain and tasted success in Ziddi in 1948. In the 50s, he became one of the biggest stars of cinema with hits like Taxi Driver, Kala Pani and the 1950 film Baazi a crime thriller. Subsequently, his films Johny Mera Naam, Hare Rama Hare Krishna and the 1966 film Guide won him his first filmfare award. His brothers Chetan and Vijay Anand were well known directors of their time and Sister Sheel Kanta Kapur is the mother of renowned Hindi and English film director Shekhar Kapur. Dev was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2001 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2002 for his contributions towards Indian cinema.

President Patil to witness Indian Army’s Sudarshan Shakti

  • President Pratibha Devisingh Patil – the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces–will witness the grand finale of the ongoing field exercise “Sudarshan Shakti” in the desert area along the Indo-Pak border. The simulated action packed with manoeuvres by troops and tanks of Southern Army in conjunction with the air effort from South Western Air Command (SWAC) would show case the might of the Indian Army through simulated assaults. About 50,000 troops equipped with T-90, T-72, Arjun Tanks and BMPs and the Air Force fighter planes, helicopters are participating in the month-long exercise in which new structures, strategies and test beds of an integrated, seamless air-land battle are performed

Indian migration remains high despite economic crisis

  • India not just continues to rank first in terms of remittances from its diaspora, just short of $60 billion in 2010, but has also seen a huge jump in migration of its workers to North America, Europe and the Gulf despite economic turmoil there.

No supra State for Nagas: Manmohan

  • Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has categorically stated that there is no proposal to form a supra State body encompassing Manipur, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh for Nagas.
