On 21st March 2022, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination has been observed. This day is observed annually across the globe.
Overview:
- In 1960, on this day, at a peaceful demonstration against the apartheid pass laws in South Africa the police opened fire which resulted in 69 deaths, and 180 injuries.
- In 1966, the international community was asked by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to increase its efforts to eliminate racial discrimination.
- In 1979, UNGA adopted a number of activities to be undertaken to combat racism.
- UNGA decided that a week of solidarity against racism would be organized annually starting from 21st March.
The theme of this year
“VOICES FOR ACTION AGAINST RACISM” is the theme for this year’s observance of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
Aim of this year’s observance
This day highlighted the importance of strengthening public representation in all decision-making areas to prevent racism. It also reaffirmed the importance of the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly and also recognized the contribution of everyone that stood up against racism.
This day also encouraged people globally to strengthen their voices against racism and racial discrimination. It also looked to provide a safe environment for all those speaking out against racism.
