XFEL- X-Ray Free Electron Laser

XFEL is the world’s largest and powerful X-ray laser. It was unveiled in Hamburg, Germany.  At present, 11 countries have participated in the project.

The European XFEL is constructed such that the electrons produce X-ray light in synchronisation, resulting in high-intensity X-ray pulses with the properties of laser light and at intensities much brighter than those produced by conventional synchrotron light sources. Using the X-ray flashes of the European XFEL, scientists will be able to map the atomic details of viruses, decipher the molecular composition of cells, take three-dimensional images of the nano world, film chemical reactions, and study processes such as those occurring deep inside planets.
