Who is Hirotugu Akaike?

Hirotugu Akaike was a Japanese statistician who worked in Information theory. The Akaike information criterion, which is now widely used for model selection and Statistical analysis was formulated by him for which he got Kyoto prize in 2006. This criterion established a new paradigm that bridged the world of data and the world of modelling, thus contributing greatly to the information and statistical sciences. He was also awarded with Purple Ribbon Medal and the Asahi Prize, which are two of the highest honours in culture and science in Japan.
