Where are Altamira, El Castillo and Tito Bustillo?

Altamira, El Castillo and Tito Bustillo are three World Heritage Sites of Spain. These sites are among the 11 Spanish locations which have long been recognised for their antiquity. Recently, the scientists have confirmed that the red dots, hand stencils and animal figures in these caves represent the oldest examples yet found of cave art in Europe. The artwork was recently judged to be more than 40,000 years old. The team arrived at the ages by examining the calcium carbonate (calcite) crusts that had formed on top of the paintings. The oldest dates coincide with the first known immigration into Europe of modern humans (Homo sapiens). Before about 41,000 years ago, it is their evolutionary cousins, the Neanderthals (Homo neanderthalensis), who dominate the continent.
