What is Trisomy D?

Trisomy D is commonly called as Patau’s Syndrome or Trisomy 13. It is a Genetic disorder which results from Trisomy of Chromosome 13 (47, 13+). This means that in this disorder, the patient has an additional chromosome 13 due to a no disjunction of chromosomes during meiosis. This abnormality leads to a cleft lip/plate or deafness, cardiac malformations, and mental retardation. This is because the extra chromosome 13 disrupts the normal course of development. The occurrence of Trisomy D is 1 among 25000. Many of the children with this abnormality die within 3 months of their birth.
