What is Carat?

Generally, Degree of purity of ‘fitness’ of a Gold alloy is measured in Carat. For example 24 carat is pure gold. 22 carat Gold contains 22 parts of gold and with 2 parts of copper. In continental Europe and U.S.A. the symbol k (from karat) is used for Carat; e.g., 22 k. Carat is also a unit of measurement of the weight of diamonds and other precious stones.

Formerly 1c. = 0.2054 gm. The international metric carat has become standard for Britain, U.S.A., France, West Germany and the Netherlands where 1c= 0.20 gm.
