What is 360 Degree Feedback?

A 360-degree feedback is a process where one is evaluated by all viz. superiors, peers and even customers to have an integrated analysis of one’s performance from all dimensions.

  • The process is highly useful to the individual as it helps one to acknowledge ones’ personality from the point of view of others.
  • It is a window to ones hitherto unexplored areas of improvement.
  • It also enhances synergy in the team as everyone is equally involved in the development of individual members.
  • The process has proved itself useful in improving customer service as customers are also made part of the evaluation process of the employee.

However, it is not linked to performance appraisals as it may dilute its potential as a tool for development when it is linked to compensation. The latter condition can decrease one’s morale. Contrastingly, when it is used purely for development purposes with no effect on compensation, even low scores are viewed in the light of constructive feedback. Thus, it is a successful tool for improving employee performance without nurturing any negative feelings.
