Skill Council for Green Jobs

Skill Council for Green Jobs (SCGJ) was established as a not for profit, autonomous industry led society and is aligned to the National Skill Development Mission. SCGJ is promoted by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

Why it was established?

There exists a huge skill shortage in the renewable energy sector. So, the SCGJ initiative was launched to supply skilled workforce to achieve the goals set in the sector. An ambitious target of adding 175GW from various renewable energy sources, including Solar, Wind, Small Hydro and Biomass has been set by the government. Also, the renewable energy sector alone is likely to create 2 million green jobs in next 10 years. There is also a huge market for renewable energy in other parts of the world. So, there is an urgent requirement of skilled manpower with broad based industry led skills.

On what areas training is imparted?

In 2016-17, SCGJ aims to train 28,800 professionals, out of which 20,000 will be trained in the solar photo voltaic segment, 2500 in operations related to wind energy, 1500 each in solid waste management and water management. The training will be provided with the help of National Institute of Solar Energy (Gurgaon), National Institute of Wind Energy (Chennai) and National Institute of Bio Energy (Jalandhar). Apart from them, 12 other private institutes will also be involved in training.

Apart from the renewable energy sector, initiatives will be launched to supply skilled workers in the areas of green building construction, treatment of sewage and industrial effluents, manufacture and maintenance of electric vehicles etc.
