Repealing and Amending Bill 2019

As part of its efforts to uphold minimum government and maximum governance, the Lok Sabha has repealed 68 obsolete laws.

Features of the Bill

  • The bill repeals 68 laws which include Beedi Workers Welfare Fund Act, 1976, and the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2001 among others.
  • The bill also proposed minor amendments to two Acts to substitute certain words viz. the Income Tax Act, 1961, and the India Institutes of Management Act, 2017.

Debating on the bill, the Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor said there were archaic provisions in some more statutes, and asked the government to educate the police about the laws it had repealed.
