New NATO Secretary General : Anders Fogh Rasmussen


Here are some facts about new NATO Secretary General Mr. Anders Fogh Rasmussen.
1. He is former Danish Prime Minister. He had served for 3 times as prime minister of Denmark. He was elected Prime minister of Denmark for the first time in 2001, reelected in 2005 & 2007.
He is succeeding Dutchman Jaap de Hoop Scheffer.
The secretary-general of NATO is responsible for coordinating the alliance’s work, leading NATO’s staff and presiding the North Atlantic Council
North Atlantic Council is the alliance’s top political governing body.
Rasmussen had strongly supported the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. He had also sent Danish troops there and has urged NATO members to send more forces to Afghanistan.
Turkey was the NATO member which resisted his candidature.
