National Shipping Board

The central government recently approved the reconstitution of the National Shipping Board with Malini Shankar, former Director General of Shipping as its head.

About NSB

The National Shipping Board is an advisory body under the Union Ministry of Shipping. It was established in 1959 based on a recommendation to the Reconstruction Policy Sub-Committee and is headquartered in Delhi.

Composition

The NSB consists of members who are elected or nominated by the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. It was recently reconstituted as a 16 member body with former Director General of Shipping, Malini Shankar as its head. It also has representatives from the Navy, Coast Guard, National Union of Seafarers of India, Maritime Union of India, National Ship Owners’ Association, etc.

Function

The function of NSB is advisory- provides advice to the central government on matters relating to the Indian shipping and its development and on matters referred to it by the central government. The National Maritime Agenda 2010- 2020 was prepared by the NSB in collaboration with the Union Ministry of Shipping.
