Important Cotton Sarees from India

Cotton has a special place in the textile industry all over the world. It is called as the ‘Pearl of Indian Weaving’. Cotton is compared to moonlight and dew drop because of its weightlessness. The history of weaving clothes from cotton in India goes back to thousands of years. The first reference to weaving is 5000 years old. The evidences from excavations reveal clothes which belonged to 3000 B.C. Cotton weaving is done in almost every state of India. The distinctiveness comes in the style of weaving. Khadi is the most conventional weaving style of India. Khadi is woven by hand. Even the yarn used in making Khadi is hand spun.

There are 23 different varieties of cotton in India. Cotton can be worn as summer wear, sarees, shirts, etc. cotton bedsheets, napkins tablemats, etc. are also equally famous. Cotton fabric is soft. The soft twist is given to cotton by hand. It maintains the hairiness of the yarn which provides extraordinary comfort in wearing cotton.

Cotton clothes are generally characterized by, breathability, high absorption, comfort and durability. Cotton do not have elasticity. The only backdrop of cotton clothes is that, they stretch and become wrinkled.

Different sarees produced in different states of India include,

Maheswari Saree

The weaving of this kind of saree is done on the banks of River Narmada in a place called Maheswar. This saree is characterized by tiny checks. Complementary soft colours are used for dyeing.

Jamdani Saree

This cotton saree is popular throughout India. It is produced in West Bengal. The patterns of this saree are very traditional.

Gharchola Saree

This saree is a traditional wedding saree. The style of weaving is concentrated in the state of Gujarat.

Sambalpuri Saree

The Sambalpuri saree from Madhya Pradesh come in variety of colours with traditional motifs. The motifs are mostly inspired by nature.

Venkatagiri saree

This is a famous cotton weaving style of Andhra Pradesh. This style of weaving has a richness to it. Other styles of Andhra include, Gadwal, Wainarpati, Nainder.

Paithani Saree

This is also a style of weaving found in Andhra Pradesh. These sarees are worn on special occasions only. The style of weaving belong to the Maratha Period.

Tanda, Toda tribal Saree

Tanda and todal embroidery is the most famous embroidery forms of india. Toda women embroider beautiful pudukulis. These pudukulis are intended to protect the tribe from cold in winters.
