GreenCo Rating System

The implementation of the GreenCo Rating System in the Indian Railways was discussed recently in the Rajya Sabha by the Union Minister of Railways and Commerce & Industry.

About the System

The GreenCo (or Green Company) Rating System was introduced by the CII to evaluate the ‘environment friendliness’ of companies. The system uses 10 parameters to evaluate the companies’ activities like renewable energy use, water conservation, green cover, solid and liquid waste management, etc.

Confederation of Indian Industry

The CII or the Confederation of Indian Industry is a non-governmental, non-profit, industrial association established in 1895. Both public and private industrial enterprises are members of this association. It involves the industrial players, civil society and the government in creating a conducive environment for industrial development of India.

Intended Nationally Determined Contribution Document

The Union Minister noted that the GreenCo Rating System was featured on the Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) Document in 2015. It is a document published by all countries that are signatory to the UNFCCC (UN Framework Convention on Climate Change). It gives the intended reductions in GHG emissions of the country.
