Green Rust

Green Rust or Fougerite was discovered in the decade of 2010s. The term if used for highly reactive iron mineral, having a positive layer charge. It possess blue-green to bluish-gray colour. It is regarded as a precursor for other iron hydroxides and related compounds, like goethite, lepidocrocite and ferrihydrite.

The highly reactive property of Green Rust is a subject of study to clean up the metal pollution and even radioactive waste. It was recently found that the Green Rust had played a similar and crucial role early in Earth’s history. Research has suggested that during the Precambrian period, green rust ‘scavenged’ heavy metals such as nickel out of the water, thus proving the effectiveness of green rust as an environmental cleaner.
