Fact Box: Dams of Karnataka

The Karnataka State is the eighth largest State in the country (i.e. after Rajasthan , Madhya Pradesh , Maharashtra, Andhra pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, & Gujarat ) and is located in the Deccan plateau. The geographical area of Karnataka is 1,90,498 sq.km accounting for 5.81% of the total area of the Country. Following are some improtant dams of karnataka State:

Almatti Dam: located in North Karnataka at Krishna River

Its the main reservoir of Upper Krishna irrigation project. It is edge of Bijapur and Bagalkot districts. The capacity of the power project is 290 MW.

Basava Sagar Dam
Located at Narayanapur in Gulbarga District, Basava Sagar Dam is an irrigation Dam on Krishna River.

Harangi Reservoir
It is located near Hudgur village, Somwarpet taluk in Kodagu district of Karnataka. Harangi River is a tributary of Kaveri River which originates from the Pushpagiri Hills of Western Ghats in Kodagu, Karnataka

Kodasalli Dam
Built across Kali River (Kalinadi) in Joida taluk of Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, built by Karnataka Power Corporation Limited.

Krishna Raja Sagara
Named after ruler of the Mysore Kingdom, Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, Krishna Raja Sagara is also known as KRS located at Kaveri River, in Mandya District near Mysore in Karnataka. There is an ornamental garden attached to the dam, called Brindavan Gardens. It was built in 1924. Mokshagundam Visvesvarayya was its chief engineer.

Linganamakki dam
It is located in Sagara taluk of karnataka.

Mari Kanive
Located near Hiriyur Taluk, Chitradurga District, It is the oldest dam in Karnataka. It was built by Mysore Maharajas pre-independence across the river Vedavathi. It provides domestic water for Hiriyur and Chitradurga. A team led by an Engineer ‘Tara Chand Dalal’ built this dam under Maharaja of Mysore Sri Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV.

Supa Dam
Built across Kalinadi ( Kannada ) or Kali river in Karnataka , Supa dam is situated in Joida taluk of Uttara Kannada district.

Chamarajsagar
Chamarajsagar or Thippagondanahalli Reservoir or T G Halli Dam is located at the confluence of the Arkavathy River and Kumudavathi River, near Bangalore. It is used by Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) as a major source of drinking water for western Bangalore. Built in 1933 under Bharath Rathna Sir M Visvesvarayya

Kadra Dam
Located in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, constructed across river Kalinadi.
