Coffee Club

Coffee Club is a group of nations which counter the bids for permanent seats by countries such as Brazil, Germany, India, and Japan or G4. G4 had put a joint bid for the UN Security Council during a closed plenary session, in which they said that “This Council should be expanded in both the permanent and non-permanent categories of membership, taking into consideration the contributions made by countries to the maintenance of international peace and security, as well as the need for increased representation of developing countries in both categories. On numerous occasions, we have reconfirmed our view that Africa should be represented in the permanent membership in an enlarged Council.” This has got a strong opposition from China, which is called the guardian angel for the opposers, Uniting for Consensus (earlier known as the Coffee Club). Uniting for Consensus (UfC) is a movement, nicknamed the Coffee Club, that developed in the 1990s in opposition to the possible expansion of the United Nations Security Council. Under the leadership of Italy, it aims to counter the bids for permanent seats proposed by G4 nations (Brazil, Germany, India, and Japan) and is calling for a consensus before any decision is reached on the form and size of the Security Council.
