Census

The procedure of systematically acquiring and recording information about the members of a given population is known as Census. As per the United Nations, the essential features of population and housing census are:

  1. Individual enumeration
  2. Universality within a defined territory
  3. Simultaneity
  4. Defined periodicity”

United Nations recommends that population censuses be taken at least every 10 years. The word Census is of Latin origin; derived from “censere” meaning “to assess”. During the Roman Republic, the census was a list that kept track of all adult males fit for military service.
