Bharatendu Harishchandra Award

Bharatendu Harishchandra is also known as father of Modern Hindi literature.
He is considered one of the greatest Hindi writers of modern India. A recognized poet, he was also a trend setter in Hindi prose-writing.
In his prose and dramas, Bharatendu Harishchandra represented the agonies of the people, country’s poverty, dependency, inhuman exploitation, the unrest of the middle class and the urge for the progress of the country.
He wrote poems under the pseudonym Girdhar Das. Benares born poet Bhartendu was influenced by the Bengal Renaissance and decided to bring the genres of social, historical, and Puranic plays and novels into Hindi. This influence reflected in his Hindi translation of the Bengali drama Vidyasundar, just three years later, in 1868.
Bhartendu was a title conferred to him by scholars of Kashi in 1880.

Bharatendu Harishchandra was multi-faceted. He made major contributions in the field of journalism, drama, and poetry.
He edited the magazines Kavi Vachan Sudha, Harishchandra Patrika, Harishchandra Magazine and Bal Vodhini.

Bharatendu Harishchandra Awards
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of India gives Bharatendu Harishchandra Awards since 1983 to promote original writings in Hindi mass communication. These awards are given for published books/manuscripts written in Hindi on any of the following subjects.

  1. Journalism and Mass Communication:
    The award is given to encourage original and creative writing in Hindi on the subjects related to various disciplines of Mass Communication i.e. Journalism, Publicity, Advertisement, Radio, Television, Film, Printing, Publications etc. In this category the First Prize is of Rs. 35,000/-, Second Prize is of Rs.25,000/-, Third Prize Rs. 20,000/- and five Consolation Prizes of Rs.5,000/- (each) and citation
  2. National Integration:
    Award is given for books on topics relating to National Integration. First Prize is of Rs. 15,000/- and Second Prize Rs. 10,000/- and citation
  3. Women’s Issue:
    Award is given to women writers for books on current issues concerning status of women in society. In this category First Prize is of Rs. 15,000/- and Second Prize Rs. 10,000/- and citation
  4. Children’s Literature:
    The award is given for books written for children. In this category First Prize is of Rs. 15,000/- and Second Prize Rs. 10,000/- and citation.
