Aleutian Islands

Aleutian Islands comprise a chain of young folded mountains situated in the northern parts of the north Pacific. Belonging to the United States of America, Aleutians are treeless volcanic islands. The maximum number of active volcanoes are found in these islands, the highest of which (Shishaldin) rises to a height of 2856 m above the sea level. The main settlement in these islands is the town of Dutch Harbour on Unalaska island. The indigenous people of these islands are known as Aleuts. This location of these islands in the vicinity of Russia accords them a strategic significance.

Aleutian Trench

Lying to the south of the chain of Aleutian Islands in the north pacific, it is a deep ocean trench. It is more than 7000m in depth. The subduction of the Pacific plate takes place in this trench, resulting into the volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. Maximum active volcanoes are found in the northern side of the Aleutian Islands.
