1985 Delhi Transistor Bomb Blast Case

The Delhi High Court had acquitted 30 out of 59 charge-sheeted individuals under the 1985 Delhi Transistor Bomb Blast case.

About the Incident

A series of bomb blasts had taken place on May 10th, 1985. These were bombs fitted in transistors and they went off in buses and other places. The explosions had killed 49 people and injured another 127 people in Delhi alone. Several other explosions took place in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

Operation Blue Star

The explosions were said to be in protest against the Operation Blue Star of 1984. It was an Indian military action that was launched during the Indira Gandhi period to remove Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his followers from Golden temple in Amritsar, Punjab. Bhindranwale was a militant religious leader of the Damdami Taksal organisation.

1984 Anti-Sikh Riots

Another incident that is said to have triggered the 1985 attack was the 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots or the 1984 Sikh Massacre. It was triggered by the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards. A series of riots were organised to massacre Sikhs in response to the assassination.
