World Day for Safety and Health Observed

The World Day for Safety and Health was observed by the International Labour Organisation on the theme of ‘Stop the Pandemic: Safety and Health at Work can Save Lives’.

About the Day

The World Day for Safety and Health is observed every year on April 28th. The custom started in 2003 to increase awareness about the need to prevent accidents and disease at work. The 2020 event was observed on the theme of ‘Stop the Pandemic: Safety and Health at Work can Save Lives’. The day is also marked as the International Commemoration Day for Dead and Injured Workers.

Global Strategy on Occupational Health and Safety

The Global Strategy on Occupational Health and Safety was adopted at the conclusion of the International Labour Conference in June 2003. The strategy calls for actions that integrate the ILO standards with advocacy, awareness raising, knowledge development, management, information dissemination and technical cooperation to maximize impact to ensure occupational health and safety (OSH).

ILO

International Labour Organisation was founded in 1919 under the League of Nations and is now a UN specialised agency. It is involved in setting of international labour standards to enable social and economic justice. It is the recipient of the 1969 Nobel Prize.
