Uttar Pradesh’s 1st Vulture Conservation to be set up at Maharajganj District

Uttar Pradesh Government has announced the state’s first Vulture conservation and breeding centre to be set up in Farenda area of Maharajganj district.
Vulture population in the country has come down to 19,000 in the last three decades from 40 million mainly because of renal failure caused due to diclofenac poisoning.

Indian Vulture is listed in the IUCN Red List as Critically Endangered since 2002. Jatayu Conservation and breeding facility at Haryana is the first Vulture breeding facility in Asia, established in the year 2001. In 2006, the first Vulture re-introduction programme of Asia was launched in Haryana from the Jataya Conservation Breeding Centre at Pinjore district.
Apart from Pinjore centre, At present, there are three Vulture conservation and breeding centre in India located at Rajabhatkhawa in Alipurduar district of West Bengal, Rani in Kamrup district of Assam and Kerwa in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
