Union Government appoints Susmita Pande as chairperson of National Monument Authority

The Union Government has appointed Susmita Pande as the new chairperson of the National Monument Authority (NMA).
She will succeed Himanshu Prabha Ray succeed Himanshu Prabha Ray and shall fill the post which was lying vacant for five months after demission of Ray from office.
She is professor a professor at Ujjain’s Vikram University. At the time of her appointment, she was the head of the School of Studies in Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology in Vikram University of Madhya Pradesh.

About National Monuments Authority (NMA)

  • NAM is quasi-judicial body that functions under the aegis of Union Ministry of Culture and Tourism. It is headquatered in New Delhi.
  • It is empowered to make recommendations to Union Government for grading and classifying centrally protected monuments and protected areas declared as of national importance.
  • It is also responsible for the preservation and protection of monuments and sites. It manages the regulated and prohibited area around the centrally protected monuments.
