Two-time Pulitzer winner Anthony Lewis passes away

Two-time Pulitzer winner Anthony Lewis (85) passed away. Anthony Lewis was a longtime New York Times columnist.

  • He took up such causes as free speech, human rights and constitutional law.
  • In 1955, Anthony won his first Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting for his report on a civilian employee of the U.S. Navy, who had been dismissed from his job on the basis of false allegations by anonymous informers.
  • In 1963, Anthony won a second Pulitzer Prize in 1963, again in the category National Reporting, for his coverage of the U.S. Supreme Court. Anthony’s famous 1964 book, “Gideon’s Trumpet,” told the story of a petty thief whose fight for legal representation led to a landmark Supreme Court decision.
