  • Sachin was conferred with this membership for his service to India-Australia relations by promoting goodwill, friendship and sportsmanship via Cricket.

How many Indians till date have been honored with this membership?

  • TWO.
  • Sachin Tendulkar became only the 2nd Indian after former Attorney General Soli Sorabjee to get the honour.

  • Sorabjee was made an Honorary Member of the Order of Australia (AM) "for service to Australia-India bilateral legal relations" in 2006.

How many non-Australian Cricketers have been honored with AM?

  • FOUR.
  • Tendulkar is the fourth non-Australian cricketer to be made an Order of Australia AM, the other three being West Indian legends- Brian Lara, Sir Garfield Sobers and Clive Lloyd.

About Soli Jehangir Sorabjee

  • imageSoli Jehangir Sorabjee is an Indian jurist. 
  • Attorney-General of India from 1998 to 2004.
  • Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court of India.

Received Padma Vibhushan in March 2002 for his defense of the freedom of expression and the protection of human rights. He worked on the Citizen’s Justice Committee which represented pro bono the 1984 anti-Sikh riots victims. Other important cases where Sorabjee appeared for are:

  • Keshavananda Bharati
  • Maneka Gandhi
  • S.R. Bommai
  • I.R. Coelho, etc.

Recently Sorabjee appeared in the case of B.P. Singhal, where the Apex Court held that Governors could not be dismissed without due cause.
