Former Mossad Director Meir Dagan passes away
Former Director of Israel’s intelligence agency Mossad Meir Dagan passed away due to liver cancer. He was 71.
Dagan had served as Director General of the Mossad from 2002 until his retirement in 2011. He was widely credited for covertly disrupting Iran’s nuclear program.
About Meir Dagan
- Born on 30 January 1945 in then Soviet Union (USSR) to parents who were Holocaust survivors who had moved to Israel after the founding of the state.
- He had started his military career in 1963 after he had joined Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
- He had played important role at various high-level positions in the Six-Day War, Yom Kippur War and 1982 Lebanon War. He retired from the army in 1995.
- He had served as a counterterrorism adviser to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
- Initially, he also had served as a National Security Adviser (NSA) to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. Later he was appointed him Director-General of Mossad in August 2002.
- During his stint as Director of Mossad, Israel is believed to have carried out deadly covert assaults and operations on Iran’s nuclear scientists and cyberattacks against its nuclear enrichment facilities.
- During his tenure, he also had implemented far-reaching structural changes in the Mossad with the aim of making it a more operations-based organization.
