Infrastructure development in Kerala

Kerala is one of the most prosperous and well-developed states in India. Kerala relies on a network of well-developed roads and waterways to establish connectivity with the various parts of the state. This enables the rapid movement of goods and personnel throughout the state and to the other parts of the country.

However, in the recent floods, the road network in Kerala was damaged due to natural elements and this has created a challenge in transportation throughout the state.

What is happening?

  • In a recent press release, it has been stated that the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) has decided to provide over 25% cost of the land acquisition cost for the redevelopment of the National Highway 66 corridor which will extend from Kasaragod to Karode.
  • The expenses for this investment will be Rs. 5,200 crore which will be made available from the kitty of Rs. 14,000 crore which was earmarked by the KIIFB for land acquisition in the projects planned by it.
  • However, the center has requested the funding by the state to be at least 50% of the total cost of the land which will be acquired as the land in Kerala is more expensive compared to other states and the current resource crunch being faced by the NHAI.
  • The NH-66 will have a right of way equal to 45 m.

What is right of way?
