India signs 5th IBSA Women’s Forum Resolution

Union Minister for Women and Child Development Krishna Tirath signed the Fifth India Brazil South Africa (IBSA) Women’s Forum Resolution. The joint resolution b/w the three nations will look at recognizing the key role of governments with the support of civil society in ensuring and accelerating efforts towards achieving gender equality and empowerment of women.

IBSA Women’s Forum:

IBSA Women’s Forum is an initiative set up under the People-to-People’s Forum by the Heads of the IBSA States during the 2ndIBSA Summit in South Africa 2007. It is a unique platform of co-operation bringing together the countries of India, Brazil and South Africa with the objective of promoting gender equality and empowerment. The forum facilitates the process of people to people consultation and sharing of best practices in order to strengthen partnerships among the three countries. 

What is IBSA?

The IBSA Dialogue Forum (India, Brazil, South Africa) is an international tripartite bloc for promoting international cooperation among these countries. It was established through Brasilia Declaration which was signed in 2003 by the foreign ministers of India, Brazil and South Africa. It represents three important poles for galvanizing South-South cooperation and greater understanding b/w three important continents of the developing world namely, Africa, Asia and South America. The forum provides the three countries with a platform to engage in discussions for cooperation in the field of agriculture, trade, culture, and defence among others.

Objectives of IBSA:

  • Promote South-South cooperation and build consensus on issues of international importance.
  • Increasing the trade opportunities among the three countries, as well as facilitate the trilateral exchange of information, technologies and skills to complement each other strengths.
  • Promote the international poverty alleviation and social development with main focus being on equitable development.
  • Explore avenues to promote cooperation in broad range of areas, which include agriculture, climate change/global Warming, culture, defence, education, energy, health, information society, science and technology, social development, trade and investment, tourism and transport.
